I take some issue with Phoebe and Lauren's whole, "Oh, Maya should've let Tristan make his own mistakes."

karydegrassi:

While I agree to some extent, in this particular case… no. Maya realized a teacher was crossing boundaries he shouldn’t have been crossing, potentially hurting her friend in the long run, and she did something about it. It was probably incredibly hard for her to betray Tristan’s trust but she did…

The idea of letting people make their own mistakes is something that should implemented on a case by case basis.  There are situations where you need to let someone fail or self destruct and hit rock bottom.  This scenario with Tristan is NOT one of them.

Also, I rolled my eyes when they referred to her as “Meddling Maya.”  Because God forbid Maya wants to avoid her teenage friend from being taken advantage of sexually by a grown man, and doesn’t want her friend Zig to just stay in a gang he doesn’t know how to get out of and wind up dead.  And the reason Maya “meddles” so much is because of a certain situation where someone she cared about (who had personal issues) committed suicide; she couldn’t help him, so now she’s vigilant in trying to help and protect those she loves.

Just like we’ve seen with the crappy behavior from the Baker parents, people shouldn’t be shamed for doing the right thing.  And we also shouldn’t be promoting a diffusion of responsibility, especially when it comes to sexual misconduct, to a studio audience that’s predominantly female. And most especially when the next two Degrassi episodes are specifically about sexual misconduct, where people will be throwing the victim under the bus. Hah, try telling Degrassi fans that Becky Baker should’ve just minded her own business when it came to that sexual assault video, since Zoë needed to learn from her “mistakes” and all.
